John Nelson press reviews
Reviews: July 09 Beethoven Festival with AYO
Given an opportunity to show off their talents, the Australian Youth Orchestra – under the baton of acclaimed American conductor John Nelson – gave a thrilling performance that could have been reasonably demanded from a much more experienced orchestra. It is always possible to compare styles of conducting and Nelson does convey an energy that seems youthful, forceful and challenging, but it is a direction clearly appreciated and respected by the members of the orchestra.

Nelson conducts with great physicality, throwing himself into the work and bringing out the very best in these remarkable young players. Take a bow, AYO; this was a very impressive performance.

A crisp, neatly performed Symphony No. 8 left no doubt about Nelson’s focus on rhythm. With succinctly worked themes, cropped note lengths and heavily accented off-beats, it scored highly on energy and excitement, most of all in the Allegro vivace’s finale.
