The Georgian baritone Lado Ataneli debuted in 1989 as Renato in Un Ballo in maschera at the Tiflis National Theater. He won international notice having won First Prize and the Grand Prix at the 1991 International Francisco-Vinas Competition in Barcelona and the first place award at the Belvedere Competition in Vienna.
Mr. Ataneli's international career began in 1996 and since then has made debuts at the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper, Opernhaus Zurich, London’s Royal Opera, Opera de Paris, Madrid’s Teatro Real, Barcelona’s Liceu, the MET and the opera companies of Washington DC, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Recent engagements have included Macbeth (MET), La Gioconda (Madrid; Berlin); Thais (Torino); Il Tabarro (London), Macbeth (Edinburgh Festival), Tosca (San Francisco) and Otello (Dallas) as well as highly acclaimed performances of La Traviata in Berlin, Otello and Pagliacci at the Vienna State Opera and Aida in Munich and Tomsky in Pique Dame (Liceu).
Lado Ataneli has recorded La Gioconda for EMI Classics with Placido Domingo.His first solo CD, “Opera Arias”, appeared in 2005 followed by a second solo album released on the Naxos label in December 2009.
Mr. Ataneli and his wife make their home in Berlin.
