Zubin Mehta was born in 1936 in Bombay, India. Zubin's first music teacher was his father, Mehli Mehta, the founder and chief conductor of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. Zubin Mehta started medical studies in Bombay, but very soon left for Vienna to study conducting with Hans Swarowsky at the Akademie für Musik. in 1958 Zubin Mehta won the Liverpool International Conducting Competition and, the same year, was a prize-winner in Tanglewood. By the time Zubin Mehta reached his 25th aniversary, he had already conducted both the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras. Zubin Mehta keeps close ties with these orchestras and conducts them almost every season.
