CD Review
"Carolyn Kotok's debut CD deserves to bring her musicianship to a wider public.
She launches into the revised version of Rachmaninov's Second Sonata at the start of the CD, immediately proclaiming her technical confidence and love of Rachmaninov's language. Passion and brilliance inhabit the outer movements while the central Lento is distinguished by gradations of dynamics and colouration of the melodic line.
Szmanowski's Opus 1 Preludes are rarely heard as a set but her championship of this composer shines through every bar.
The Second Book of Debussy's Images draws sensitive and imaginative playing, while Simon Weir's production and Campbell Hughes' sound engineering have captured the essence of Impressionism in Kotok's vivid hands. A Chopin group, beginning with two Impromptus and ending with a delicious account of the C sharp minor Mazurka, Op 63 No 3 conclude a thoroughly enjoyable disc.
If you are interested in following a potentially major career then this CD is warmly recommended."
