Biography

In 2000 Recent Sarah V. Chew went to Vietnam as the Director of the Municipal Opera in Saigon, where she directed work including Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni with a cast of 95. Other directing credits include the premieres of Writing Orlando by Kit Hesketh-Harvey and James McConnel (Bridewell Theatre, London); Weill & Lenya by Judith Paris (New End Theatre, London); Into The Woods by Stephen Sondheim (Wimbledon Theatre) and Date by Stephen Clark (Wimbledon Theatre Studio). In 2002 Sarah was invited on to the Emerging Directors Programme at the National Theatre Studio.

Sarah works extensively developing plays with new writers and translations of plays by established living playwrights from other countries, and in 2003 Sarah was awarded a bursary by the Cove Park Foundation to develop new play translations and translating techniques. She was a finalist in the Opera Europa / Camerata Nuova International Prize for Opera Direction 2003. As an assistant Sarah has worked with directors including Paul Jepson, Ken Russell, Jamie Hayes, Dion McHugh, Julia Hollander and, most recently, Steven Unwin for Garsington Opera.
