Biography
Teo Gheorghiu: Concerto debuts in the 2009/10 season include his first appearances with the English Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and the Toronto Philharmonia. He will return to London’s Southbank Centre twice in the season (for Rachmaninov’s Second and Third Concertos) and give recitals at the Beethovenfest Bonn and the Quartier des Spectacles in Montréal amongst others.
In future seasons he looks forward to return visits to the Berner Symphonie Orchester and to Musikkollegium Winterthur (with Sir Neville Marriner), as well as both recital and concerto debuts in Taiwan. Born in Zürich in 1992 Teo Gheorghiu has been a pupil at the Purcell School, London since 2001, where he is taught piano by William Fong. In 2004 he won first prize in the San Marino International Piano Competition, and the following year he was awarded first prize in the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition in Weimar, Germany.
Teo made his debut in the Tonhalle, Zürich in 2004 with Schumann’s Piano Concerto. Since then, he has performed concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninov and Bach, working with conductors such as Howard Griffiths, Andrey Boreyko, Justus Frantz, Christopher Warren-Green and Muhai Tang.
Recent recitals have included performances in Milan (Societa del Quartetto), Istanbul, Bad Kissingen, Berne, Zürich and Basel. he film has received numerous awards and as a result Teo has performed at the Istanbul, Tribeca (New York) and Locarno Film Festivals. In addition to his academic studies, Teo is a keen sportsman – playing football with almost as much energy and passion as he does the piano.
